An alleged drunken driver crashed his BMW convertible at a railroad crossing east of Los Angeles Saturday, and a passenger was hurt when a train came along and totaled the car.

A Montebello police sergeant said the driver was arrested for suspicion of drunken driving, and the passenger suffered a broken arm.

Around 3:46 a.m. Saturday, the car was involved in some sort of single-vehicle crash and broke down on train tracks next to the intersection of Montebello and Olympic boulevards. A Union Pacific freight train then hit the disabled BMW, said Sgt. Jennifer Garcia of the Montebello Police Department.

The BMW driver and a second passenger were not injured, she said. All three men in the BMW are about the same age, she added.

The car appeared to be totaled and was impounded, Garcia said.

A Union Pacific spokesman, Aaron Hunt, said “it typically takes our trains more than a mile to stop, and in this case the train was unable to stop before hitting the vehicle.”
