A woman was in custody Tuesday on suspicion of fatally strangling a man during a possible drug transaction in the Monterey Hills area of Los Angeles, authorities said.
The crime occurred about 4 p.m. Monday in the 500 block of Kendall Avenue, said Los Angeles police Officer Bruce Borihanh of the Media Relations office. Police arrested the woman, in her 20s, at the scene, Borihanh said. Her name was not immediately released.
The fatally injured man was identified as Joseph Abraham Medrano, 30, of Los Angeles, said coroner’s Assistant Chief Ed Winter.
Four alleged gang members were arrested by LAPD Hollenbeck Station police officers, among them was a 16-year-old.
On Nov. 23, police spotted a grey four-door 1990s-model Toyota Camry at Lorena Steet and Whittier Blvd in Boyle Heights and a pursuit ensued, according to Hollenbeck Watch Commander Sgt. Nate Williams. The pursuit ended on the 500 block of East Avenue 28 in Montecito Heights where three suspects were arrested when they exited the vehicle, he said. However, a fourth suspect fled on foot and was later located using search dogs, Williams told EGP.
The suspects—ages 16, 18, 20, and 21—were arrested at 10:40 p.m. on suspicion of car theft.
About 2,600 Department of Water and Power customers in the Highland Park area lost electricity Tuesday due to downed power lines.
MaryAnne Pierson of the DWP said the outage occurred about 2:15 p.m. in the area of Monte Vista just south of Avenue 59.
“It could have been a car running into a pole or a tree branch,” she said of the outage’s cause. “I just don’t know.”
The outage extended past Avenue 50, with some residents and business getting power back by 6:30 p.m.
A man died 11 days after being attacked in Bell Gardens, authorities said Tuesday.
The attack in the 7700 block of Garfield Avenue, one block south of Clara Street, occurred at 10:21 p.m. on Nov. 9. The man was pronounced dead last Tuesday, said sheriff’s Deputy Mark Pope.
The man’s name was not released, nor were the circumstances of the assault, Pope said.
Sheriff’s homicide investigators are helping Bell Gardens police investigate the homicide.
