Boyle Heights: Nun Severely Injured by Hit-and-run Driver

Los Angeles police asked public help today in finding a hit-and-run motorist who severely wounded a 70-year-old nun.

The suspect is believed to have been driving a black truck and authorities are seeking the public’s help in locating that suspect.

Sister Raquel Diaz, Director of Religious Education at the Church of Assumption was in the crosswalk at Winter Street and North Evergreen Avenue when she was struck at about 5:20 p.m. by a black truck going southbound on North Evergeen, the LAPD said.

The truck driver continued south on Evergreen without stopping after his vehicle hit Diaz, who has been a nun for more than 50 years, police said.

Paramedics took Diaz to an area hospital in critical condition.

Police had no suspect information and no arrests have been made.

Central Traffic Division detectives asked anyone with any information regarding the crash to call them at (213) 833-3713.

Police said a reward up to $25,000 is available to community members who provide information leading up to the offender’s identification, apprehension, and conviction or resolution through a civil compromise, through the Los Angeles Administrative Code’s Hit and Run Reward Program Trust Fund.
