About 100 residents have been evacuated from an East Los Angeles neighborhood due to a gas leak. The evacuation affects 50 to 60 homes on the 300 block of South Gerhart Avenue, between West Pomona Boulevard and East Beverly Boulevard, according to the Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department.

A work crew in the neighborhood punctured the gas line. Sheriffs deputies from the East Los Angeles Station conducted the evacuation while Los Angeles County Fire personnel were working to repair the gas line.

The ruptured gas line was reported at 2:45 p.m., and evacuees were being transported via Metro Buses to Garfield High School, where the Red Cross set up an evacuation center, according to Deputy Kim Manatt of the Sheriff’s Headquarters Bureau’s Newsroom.

The work to repair the gas line was expected to last several hours.
