Authorities on Wednesday identified a carjacking suspect who was shot to death at the end of a police chase in South Gate.

David Pacas, 36, died about 8 a.m. Tuesday at the scene of the shooting, near Santa Ana Street and California Avenue, said coroner’s Assistant Chief Ed Winter. His hometown was not known.

Police said Pacas had been driving a Honda Pilot SUV that was carjacked earlier Tuesday in the South Los Angeles area.

Officers tried to pull it over, but Pacas kept going and crashed into a woman’s car and several parked vehicles, authorities said. The injured woman was taken to a hospital for treatment of injuries.

After the crash, Pacas got out of the SUV and ran into an alley, with police in foot pursuit. A confrontation ensued, and police fatally shot him.

There were no reports of any officers being injured.

The shooting scene is on the border between South Gate and Hawaiian Gardens.

A 20-year-old man who failed to yield for a traffic stop in South Gate was arrested Monday after leading police on a chase that ended with a crash in Boyle Heights, authorities said.

The pursuit began about 9:25 a.m. in the area of Garfield Avenue and Firestone Boulevard, according to Capt. Darren Arakawa of the South Gate Police Department.

After driving on the Long Beach (710) and San Bernardino (10) freeways, the suspect crashed the car into an SUV at the intersection of Mission Road and First Street.

The driver, identified as Rolando Pineda, fled into a nearby business but was found and arrested, authorities said.

Two passengers in the car were treated at a hospital and have not been arrested, pending further investigation, Arakawa said.

Pineda was booked on suspicion of evading, hit-and-run. The young man also had an outstanding warrant, according to the captain.

He was being held in lieu of $100,000 bail and was due in a Downey courtroom on Wednesday, according to sheriff’s inmate records.
